Narrative
Note: Ralph Monroe Fawcett
The entry and biographical excerpt for Ralph in the text Christian Metzger: Founder of an American Family 1682-1942 (p183) erroneously reported his birthdate as 5 Aug 1911, though his Ohio Birth record and his US Social Security Death Index record both give his birthdate as 15 Aug 1911. At the time of the text's publication, Ralph would have been about thirty years old, and the excerpt gave his rank as Lieutenant and stated he was a pilot.
Further searches turned up a Georgia Death record for Ralph from 1960, and his entry on the FindaGrave.com website shows him buried in Arlington National Cemetery, and the photo for his gravestone indicates his rank as Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force. His headstone is shared with his wife Eula V. Fawcett (b. 12 Mar 1911, d. 6 Sep 1997), though I have not yet found a marriage record for the two, nor her parentage or maiden name.
Posted to a Rootsweb forum on 27 Apr 2005 was a message containing the transcribed text of Ralph's obituary, which read:
"Ralph M. Fawcett, a former Toledoan and a retired air force lieutenant colonel, died in Fort Benning
Hospital, Cloumbus, Ga. He was 49. Mr. Fawcett was born in Ottawa, Ohio and lived in Toledo from
1929 until 1936, attending the University of Toledo. He enlisted in the air force in 1936 and received
his wings three years later. During World War II he commanded a squadron which searched the Gulf
of Mexico for submarines. He also set up training bases for B26 pilots. At the time of retirement in
1957, he was chief of administration at Wright Field, Dayton. Surviving are his wife, Eula; mother, Mrs.
Martha E. Drummer, Ottawa; sisters, Mrs. Mary F. Nemire and Mrs. Ann Jo Scofield, Toledo, and Mrs.
Loretta Smith, Ottawa; brothers, George C. and Robert M., Galveston, Tx., and John H., Arlington,
Tex. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Arlington, Va., and burial in Arlington Cemetery."
(The submitter notes below the transcribed text that no date or source was available, and that the obituary was found in an old box with papers dated from 1950 to 1960.)
As Ralph was listed in the 1940 US Census as living on his own as a single man, and as the text (published in 1942) does not list a marriage for him, it stands to reason (with the information present in his obituary) that he did not marry until after his service in WWII. His obituary also indicates that he and Eula had no surviving children at the time of his death. Whether his widow, Eula, remarried after his death is unknown to me at this time.
