Narrative

William Schoen Family History

[For additional information, refer to the family history notes for his father, John Schoen.]

William Schoen married twice - the first in 1896 to Henrietta Duddeck, with whom he had a son (Albert Christian, who died in 1903 at about five years of age) and two daughters (Adela and Sadie). Henrietta died in 1911, at the age of 33. By 1920, William had remarried to Minna (presumably short for Wilhelminna) Wein. It isn't entirely clear whether Minna had been previously married or not, and while two more children (Clarence and Ruth) were added to the household, there is some question as to whether the elder of the two was born to William and Minna, versus being a child of hers from a previous relationship. In the 1920 US Census listing for William's household, the five-year-old Clarence is designated a step-son. In subsequent census records, Clarence is listed as a son, not a step-son. If he was not born to William and Minna's marriage, William likely adopted him early on, and certainly seems to have considered him a son of his own - it was Clarence who held the family farm after William's death, and who continued to farm it until his own death.

William's family remained exceedingly loyal to the church of which his grandparents (Carl and Charlotte Schoen) were founding members. Of William's four surviving children, all were confirmed at Cross Lutheran Church in Ixonia, Dodge Cty, Wisconsin (according to the church's 125th anniversary booklet - Adela, 1914; Sadie, 1917; Clarence, 1927; Ruth, 1935). Of the two that married, both were wedded at Cross Lutheran: Sadie, twice (first to Walter Tietz, and then to Walter's older brother Alvin after she was widowed) and Ruth once (to Harvey Grulke). All of William's children except for Ruth are buried in the church cemetery. Ruth is buried in Iowa, where she had moved to live with her daughter Eileen sometime after 1990. All except Ruth remained lifelong members of Cross Lutheran.

William's first wife, Henrietta, is buried in the cemetery at Cross Lutheran, with her own plot and gravestone, while William is buried with a shared stone next to Minna, not many plots away from Henrietta.
