Narrative

Note: The unconfirmed marital and family history of Laura Alice Weible

After the census listings that placed her in her parents' household - 1870 and 1880 US Censuses and the 1875 Kansas State Census - I had not initially found further records for Laura until finding a FindaGrave.com listing for Laura A. Cartwright. The pictured gravestone on the listing contains only that name and the inscription "Died Dec 24 1950," though the listing itself named her Laura Alice "Lol" (Weible) Cartwright. The supplemental information for the listing goes on to say:

"Born about 1867 in Illinois to George Christian Weible and Mary Jane Gilliland. Married
1) William Snider Jan 1, 1889 Jackson County, KS, 2) James W. Bromilow before 1907
and 3) Oliver Cartwright."

The listing also includes links to a spouse (James William Bromilow, b. 1875, d. 1926) and a child (James W. Bromilow, b. 1907, d. 1964).

From this, I found the indexed marriage record for Laura A. Weible and William J. Snider, with the date and location indicated above. I have not managed to established vital dates, birthplace, or parentage for William, nor have I determined how their marriage ended or whether they had children.

I have also not managed to find further marriage records for Laura to either of the other two men mentioned in the FindaGrave.com listing, nor any birth records naming her a mother. For the third husband mentioned, Oliver Cartwright, I have found no obvious likely candidate, much less one with obvious connections to Laura.

Census records have provided at least some insight into Laura's life after her marriage to William Snider, as well as how her path crossed with that of the Bromilow family. These census records also provided some explanationfor the difficulties in locating records pertaining to Laura in my initial searches, with regards to her reported age at various times.

- In 1910, "Laura A. Snider," age thirty-six, single, was listed as a boarder in Chillicothe; her parents' birthplaces were given as Ohio (father) and Maryland (mother), with her birthplace listed as Illinois. Also in 1910 in Chillicothe (in the same census and election ward) was the Bromilow family, including the grandparents (James and Emily), father James Jr. (age thirty-five, single, Illinois-born), and grandson also named James Jr. (age two, Illinois-born). (Also included in that listing was Helen Bromilow, Illinois-born and age thirty-two, listed as a daughter of the household.)

- In 1920, the youngest James, now listed as age twelve, was still living with his grandparents in Chillicothe, along with his aunt Nellie Alder and her husband Lee W. Alder. His father was counted as a married boarder, age forty-five, in a household in Wichita, Sedgwick Cty, Kansas, along with his wife Laura Bromilow, listed as Illinois-born and her age given as forty. (James and Laura were likely living together at least a few years prior to 1920, as Laura was listed as James' nearest relative, given the surname Bromilow, and noted as his wife on his WWI draft card dated 12 Sep 1918.)

- In 1930, Laura Bromilow (Illinois-born, age fifty-one) was listed as a widowed boarder in a different household in Wichita; if the assumption of the man listed on FindaGrave.com as her second husband is correct, then the elder James Bromilow had died in 1926. I have not found a census listing fot 1930 for the youngest James Bromilow, though he was named as the father on a 1931 birth record for a girl, surname Bromilow, in Chicago, Cook Cty, Illinois, with the mother's name given as Ellen Parce of Wisconsin.

- In 1940, Laura Bromilow (age fifty-nine, Illinois-born) was listed as a widowed head of her household, living alone in Kechi Twp, Sedgwick Cty, Kansas. The younger James Bromilow, age thirty-two, was counted in a household in Chillicothe, living with an Illinois-born woman named Helen Bromilow, age sixty-seven, divorced; the two were listed as mother and son. No young girl is listed as living with them, despite the 1931 birth record naming James as the father. Not long after this census, James enlisted in the Army in March of 1942.

My supposition at this point regarding the youngest James Bromilow is that he was born to father James W. Bromilow in 1907, either out-of-wedlock or during a short-lived marriage that ended in either divorce or the death of the elder James' first wife, though I must note that I have not found a marriage record for him nor a birth record for the younger James that would name his mother. I have not found a marriage record for the younger James, and the only further traces I have found of the mother of his child (Ellen Parce) is a 1930 US Census record placing her as a boarder in Chicago; I have found no further record of his purported unnamed daughter. The older woman living with him in 1940, Helen Bromilow, I believe to be his aunt, sister to his father James; she was counted in the 1880 and 1900 US Censuses (both in Chillicothe) with her elder brother James and their parents, but called Nellie in those records, and in the 1920 US Census (noted above) she was named Nellie Alder. By the time of the 1940 US Census, Helen was divorced and calling herself by the Bromilow surname again.

Laura, then, appears to have had no children of her own, and it is not known if she was ever effectively a step-mother to the younger James Bromilow, as I have not found any indication that they ever lived in the same household. Her purported third marriage (to Oliver Cartwright) must have occurred after the 1940 US Census, prior to her death in 1950. That her gravestone bears no birthdate or age information may be a factor of no one knowing her actual age at the time of her death; she had been misreporting her age by more than ten years for most of the latter half of her life.
