Narrative

[Obituary for Henry Watterson, from the Oconomowoc Enterprise, 24 Jun 1910, p8.]

Henry Watterson, a former resident of Mapleton and Oconomowoc, died at his home at Lake City, Minn., where he had lived for the past several years, Saturday, June 18, 1910, of nephritis and meningitis. He was 65 years of age and is survived by his wife and two brothers, William and Ed. Watterson, and a sister, Mrs. Adam Miles.

The body was brought to this city for interment Monday, funeral services being held at the Methodist church here at ten o'clock Tuesday morning, conducted by the local Post, G.A.R, he being a member of that order. The body was placed in the Van Curen vault in La Belle cemetery until such time as the vault which the deceased ordered some time ago shall be in readiness.

Narrative

Note: Henry Watterson

Henry was the second child born to John Watterson and Elizabeth Cannell, and the last of their children to be born on the Isle of Man; the remainder of the siblings were born in New York. As a teenager, Henry (called "Harry" at times) enlisted for the Union in the Civil War, serving over two years in the 25th New York Battery. A short few years after his discharge, the entire family moved west, settling in Ashippun, Dodge Cty, Wisconsin, where father John would farm until his later years.

In 1869, Henry married Henrietta D. Baker, daughter of the English-born Solomon Baker and Charlotte Counsell, residents of Ashippun. Henrietta's mother had died young, leaving her an only child with her father by the age of eleven. (Solomon would remarry, to Amelia Wiseman, and have several more children, relocating to rural Oconomowoc, Waukesha Cty, Wisconsin in the process.)

By 1880, Henry and Henrietta had moved to Union, Pierce Cty, Wisconsin, where they would remain until moving to Lake City, Wabasha Cty, Minnesota by 1900. Henry's occupation was typically given as "landlord" or "capitalist" on census forms and other records, suggesting he had taken his service earnings and pension and parlayed them into property holdings. Records do not indicate that Henry and his wife had any children - in fact, the census records display a distinct lack of children, though the twenty-year gap between the federal census records (from 1880 to 1900) does leave it open to an unlikely possibility.

Henry died in 1910, and Henrietta followed in 1912. The two of them are buried in La Belle Cemetery in Oconomowoc, Waukesha Cty, Wisconsin, in a large crypt near the northwest entrance to the cemetery. Outwardly, the crypt bears only the family surname and the icon of the Three Legs of Mann, and the only interments within are Henry and his wife.

Henry's reported place of birth is relatively consistent, albeit with some variation in the census records that can be likely attributed to most people's lack of familiarity with the Isle of Man. It was alternately noted as Europe, England, and, in one memorably mistaken recording, Maine. One of those records also gave his immigration date as 1846.
