Narrative

There appear to have been two men named Ludwig Melcher living in Dodge Cty, Wisconsin in about the same time period, and both appear to have been born overseas about 1832. Sorting through the records and findings may help determine this. The original death date I had attributed to "our" Ludwig is 1901, but there are census records for a Ludwig and wife Auguste in Dodge Cty through at least 1920.

The two marriage records may also be indicate a resolution to this apparent conflict in information; one marriage record is to Ernestine Winde in Jackson Cty, Wisconsin in 1860, and this pair appear to be resident in Emmet, Dodge Cty, Wisconsin in 1870. There is also a Dodge Cty marriage record for a Ludwig and Auguste Binte in February of 1870, and this pair is the one I believe can be found in Herman, Dodge Cty, Wisconsin in 1910 and 1920. (I should also note that there is a census record from 1910 for a widowed Auguste Melcher living in Watertown, Dodge Cty, Wisconsin with her son August; she is likely the widow of the Ludwig Melcher buried in Watertown with a death date of 1901, according to the FindaGrave.com website.)
