Narrative

Herman Beaber initially attended college at the University of California, where he studied chemistry and electrical engineering. After two years, he left college and entered the ministry, eventually becoming a missionary and working in the Philippines in 1940.

The Japanese took many people in the Philippines prisoner in 1942, during the early course of World War II; Herman Beaber was one of several missionaries taken to Los BaƱos Internment Camp approximately 40 miles south of Manila. There he remained for three years until rescued a day prior to execution (on 23 Feb 1945) by US military action.

Herman kept a diary of his days in the prison camp, which has since been edited and published (through the work of his son, John S. Beaber) in book form, titled Deliverance! It Has Come!

Herman returned to the Philippines and continued his missionary work for several years after the war, with the aid of his sister, Bernice. For reasons of health, he left missionary work in 1951 and moved to Texas. He married in 1955, and he and his wife adopted two children. In his years in Texas he worked as a counsellor in a county home for youth, and eventually in administration of a boys' home. After marriage, he worked in management of a truck rental company. He died early in February 2001.
