Narrative

Note: Ratio Varner's name, birthdate, and family

In all the records I have found but one, Ratio's name is given as Ratio B. or Ratio Blough Varner; the one exception is his marriage record, which names him Raymond B. Varner.

His birthdate is reported with slight differences on the various records, as well. On his indexed Ohio birth record, it is listed as 6 Apr 1891, while on both his WWI and WWII draft registration cards, he reported his birthdate as 5 Apr 1891, and on his death record it is reported as 5 Apr 1892. I suspect the indexed birth record was read very slightly in error (as there were blatant misspellings of his mother's name, as well), though the original is not directly available for review to confirm. As for the discrepancy on his death record, I would expect that this was a reporting or clerical error.

Ratio was married twice; first to Helen E. Baum in Defiance Cty, Ohio on 8 Oct 1911. Ratio and Helen divorced sometime prior to her remarriage in December 1920 to the widower Charles Leroy Kneese, to whom she would remain married until his death in 1942. (Charles' first wife was Kathren Gertrude Deckrose, Helen's first cousin on her mother's side.)

There is a US Census listing in Defiance, Defiance Cty, Ohio for a Helen Varner of the appropriate age, with her status given as married. With her in that household are Donald Varner, age six, and Mabel Varner, age five. I have not confirmed that this trio are Ratio's estranged wife and children, so I have not currently added them to the family tree until I can find more information to link them to Ratio.

(I will note that I have not found a 1920 US Census listing for Ratio at this point.)

Ratio's second marriage was in March 1921 to Frances Marie Hiller; they appear to have remained married until his somewhat early death at age fifty-one in early 1943. Frances would follow him less than fifteen months later, a month shy of her forty-sixth birthday. The two of them appear to have had one child - Charles A. Varner, born about 1929, several years after Ratio and Frances were married. I have not found further information for Charles after the 1940 US Census listing for his parents' household, though I will note that he only in his mid-teens by the time of his parents' deaths. His paternal grandparents had died in 1941 and 1943, though I have not confirmed whether his maternal grandparents were still alive when he was orphaned. I would imagine that, if they survived their daughter Frances, Charles may well have lived with them as a young man, or possibly with one of his parents' siblings.
