James W. Miles, 88, of Hartford, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Beverly Terrace Nursing Home, Watertown.
He was born Jan. 29, 1915, in Stone Bank, Wis., to the late William and Ruth (nee Steel) Miles.

James was a crop duster for the cranberry farms in Wisconsin and other types of farms.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps and flew many missions in the South Pacific and Asian Campaigns.

After World War II, he was a pilot instructor for Army Air Corps at Ponca City, Okla.

He loved to fly, and started the Hartford Airport, which later was dedicated to him and named Miles Field in his honor.

Survivors include a brother, Melvin (Lee) Miles of Johnson Creek; a sister, Evelyn Reyher of Summit; a daughter-in-law, Pam Miles of Oconomowoc; grandchildren, Tammi (Jeff) Brinkman of Oconomowoc, Tracy Miles of Hartland, Tricia (Mark) Griswold and Jim Miles, both of Oconomowoc; other relatives and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Lila; a son, Jim; and an infant son.

Visitation at the Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home in Hartford will be Friday, May 4, from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral services.

Rev. Ron Pinc will officiate, and private interment will be in Stone Bank Cemetery.
