Narrative

Note: John Minnich and family

John and his wife Elizabeth Kitt married in early 1869, and the two of them lived together first in Roanoke, Huntington Cty, Indiana, and a few years later in Huntington, Huntington Cty. Here they lived on Guilford Street for many years, though without any children born to them. Sometime between 1890 and 1900, they took in Lillian Morrison, a Massachusetts-born orphan whose parentage I have not yet discovered. John and Elizabeth raised her as their daughter, though I believe she was likely aware that they were not her natural parents, given her age - the fact seemed to be common knowledge, by inference from the obituaries that would run in the papers later.

Whether John and Elizabeth ever formally adopted "Lillie" is unknown, but she was often referred to as "Miss Minnich" and otherwise given their surname. At some point, Lillie contracted tuberculosis, and was in poor health for many years, tended faithfully by her adoptive mother, Elizabeth.

In late 1904 or early 1905 Elizabeth began having health issues of her own, which were determined to be due to cancer - specifically, a tumor in her lungs. The local newspapers, reporting on her death, assumed the cancer's cause was due to her having contracted tuberculosis from Lillie, and the reporters made a great deal out of Elizabeth's sacrifice of her own health in the care of her adopted daughter. Whether there was an actual link or not, Elizabeth died 13 Nov 1905 after undergoing surgery and treatment at the local hospital; her funeral was held at the house, and mostly-bedfast Lillie was reported to attend despite her frail state.

Sixteen days later, Lillie died from complications of her infection, and was buried near Elizabeth in Mount Hope Cemetery in Huntington. Her gravestone, according to the listing on FindaGrave.com, names her Lillian Minnich, though the listing does not include a photo for verification.

John would remarry a few years later to the widow Christiana (Ravensnider) Martin, and she and her sons would live with him until his death in 1920. The listings for John and Elizabeth on FindaGrave.com do include photos of their matched stones, but for reasons I haven't discovered the death date on Elizabeth's stone quite clearly reads "1909." Her death in 1905 is well-established in the clippings contained in the files of Jane Anne Thomas (one of which, from the Huntington Evening Herald, carries her death announcement in a front-page headline under the issue date of 13 Nov 1905). I'm uncertain as to whether the stones pictured on the website are simply the wrong pair of stones, or whether Elizabeth's was replaced at some point (possibly at John's death) and the older stone was worn and difficult to read correctly, or whether there is some other explanation.
