Narrative

[Memorial Resolution for Professor Emeritus Russell J. Hosler, from Faculty Document 1521, 6 Nov 2000, University of Wisconsin, Madison.]

MEMORIAL RESOLUTION OF THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON
ON THE DEATH OF PROFESSOR EMERITUS RUSSELL J. HOSLER
Russell J. Hosler, professor emeritus, died Wednesday, December 8, 1999 at Mercy Hospital Janesville Wisconsin. He was born April 2, 1906 in Ohio, the son of John Henry and Etta (Spitznaugle) Hosler. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Defiance (Ohio) College; his Masters in Arts from Toledo University and his doctorate degree from Indiana University in 1946.
He taught business education in the public schools of Toledo, Fostoria, and Montpelier Ohio. From 1942 to 1944 he taught in the Naval Training School at Indiana University. He remained at Indiana University on the staff on the School of Business until 1946 when he joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to organize and implement a program in business teacher education. He always noted that one of the most gratifying experiences he had was that of working with business education teachers and other business educators throughout the state – in secondary schools, technical institutes and four-year educational institutions. Many of these individuals were his former students having served as major professor to 340 students who completed graduate degrees and approximately the same number who graduated from the undergraduate program in business teacher education before his retirement from the university in 1976.
In addition to his many articles in business education periodicals, Russ Hosler was the co-author of Gregg Shorthand for Colleges, Gregg Transcription for Colleges, Programmed Gregg Shorthand, Personal Typing and The History of the National Business Education Association. He was recognized for his considerable contribution to the field when he was presented with the John Robert Gregg Award in Business Education. This national award is given each year to a person judged to have made outstanding and meritorious contributions to the development and advancement of business education.
Among his many committee assignments during his 30 years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Russ was most proud of his campus-wide assignments as the Graduate School Administrative Council, the University Committee, and the Social Studies Divisional Committee, including the responsibility of chair of this committee. He also served as chairman of the Department of Education, later to become the School of Education.
Russ was also active in many professional organizations. In 1937-38 he served as president of the Ohio Business Teachers Association and in both 1955 and 1968 chaired the National Business Teachers Association. He was also president of the National Association of Business Teacher Educators Association and served on the Executive Committee for the Associated Organization for Teacher Education from 1959-1966.
Upon his retirement from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Alpha Eta Chapter of Delta Pi Epsilon established the annual "Russ Hosler Lecture" to be delivered by an outstanding leader in the field of business education. In addition, the graduate program in continuing and vocational education presents an annual "Russell J. Hosler Distinguished Research Award" to the author of the outstanding doctoral dissertation of the year.
In 1987 the State Senate of Ohio issued a resolution and presented it to Russ Hosler on the event of the 50th anniversary of the Ohio Business Teachers Association citing "the invaluable contributions of Russ Hosler to the field of business education." Words echoed across the nation upon his death.

Russell J. Hosler is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret, three children, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Hilda Hosler.
