Shinquock, Marie

Birth Name Shinquock, Marie
Birth Name Shingwauk Shinquock, Ka-bi-ni-bi

Her Ojibwe given name (from the letter to Robert Grover from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, United States Department of the Interior, dated 12 June 1974) appears to have been Ka-bi-ni-bi; her Ojibwe surname (unconfirmed) may be Shingwauk (with variant spellings Shinquock, Shuiquoch, Shincock, Shinnok, Shinguok, and Shinkok) based on query information from an ancestrylibrary.com post from 15 June 2002. This query indicates that a Marie Pine (with Ojibwe name KaBiNiBi) married a Joseph Lemere (numerous variant spellings) in either Brown or Marinette County, WI, in July 1855. This same query gives her parents' names as mother Shinkok and father Nomatocgnock, and states she had a will (in Marathon County) referring to the sale of unspecified Indian lands, with three heirs.

Narrative

Note: Researching Marie (Ka-bi-ni-bi) Shinquock

I have significant amounts of research yet to do on Marie, though so far I have found a birth record for her in Marathon Cty, Wisconsin giving her birthdate as sometime in May 1942. I don't know when she died, but it must have bene prior to 1905, as her husband (Joseph Lemieux) gives his marital status as "widowed" in both the 1905 Wisconsin State Census and the 1910 US Census.

She and Joseph had at least seven children; I've assumed that three of them outlived her, as her estate's probate indicates she had three heirs. The land allotment in Lac du Flambeau reservation that passed to her daughter Ottilie Lemieux was from Marie's family.

"Shinquock" is one of the more prominent and storied tribal surnames among the Ojibwe, particularly in Ontario. It is often translated as "Pine" when tribe members choose to use an English surname.

ADDENDUM: A public Ancestry.com tree (owner "deaconjmf") gives her vital dates as b. 1838 in Lac du Flambeau, Vilas Cty, Wisconsin, d. 30 Mar 1888 in the same location, and names her "Ki Bi Ni Bi." It also specifies that she is Ojibwe. It does not cite any sources.
