Narrative
Note: Researching the family of Ellsworth Eckert
The majority of the records I have been able to find for Ellsworth, his wife, and his two daughters are US Census records, and even those have left me with some gaps in my searches. The following is a summary of their family history, based on what I have found so far.
After the 1885 State Census of Nebraska, which listed Ellsworth in his parents' household in Osceola, Polk Cty, Nebraska, the next record I have been able to find for him is the 1900 US Census listing in Webb City, Jasper Cty, Missouri for his household, including his Ohio-born wife Susie and his Nebraska-born daughters Bernice and Neva. I have not found a marriage record for Ellsworth and Susie yet, though her maiden name appears to be Clime (b. 1873, d. 1959), as shown on the photo of her gravestone listed on the FindaGrave.com website, in Mount Hope Cemetery, Webb City. Unsourced online information (including the linked parents on the FindaGrave.com listing) suggests she was the daughter of Fred and Emma (Strauss) Clime, and there is a record from the 1880 US Census that lists the three of them together in a household in Delphos, Allen Cty, Ohio.
In the 1910 US Census, there is a listing in Webb City for Susie Eckert with daughters Bernice and Neva, now age eighteen and sxteen, respectively. In this record, Susie gives her status as married. This is the last confirmed record I have been able to find for Bernice, though I believe I have further information for her detailed below. Meanwhile, Ellsworth is listed living with his older sister Mary (Eckert) Campbell, her husband John A. Campbell, and her teenaged son Ralph in Plattevill, Weld Cty, Colorado, with his status listed as married.
In the 1920 US Census, Susie was listed again in Webb City, this time with only her daughter Neva included in her household; Susie gives her status as divorced. In that same year, Ellsworth was listed again in the household of his older sister Mary and her husband John, in Greeley, Weld Cty, Colorado; he gives his status as divorced, as well.
Ellsworth appears in the 1925 Iowa State Census living with his older sister Kate (Eckert) Utterback in Mills Cty, Iowa; he gives his marital status as widowed. This is the last confirmed record I have been able to find for Ellsworth, though I will note that his parents' marker is shared with a son "E. Eckert," with a death date of 1928 on the inscription. This would almost certainly be Ellsworth, though I have not found a confirmed death record for him. The inscription seems to give his year of birth as 1876, which conflicts with the presumed birth year I have of 1871.
In the 1930 US Census, Susie is listed as a boarder in a household in Joplin, Jasper Cty, Missouri, this time with her status given as widowed, which also seems to suggest that Ellsworth had died prior to 1930.
In the 1940 US Census, Susie is again listed in Joplin, this time with her daughter Neva, now a forty-six-year-old widow bearing the surname "Feree" on the form. Searches for Neva with this surname turn up a burial listing in the same cemetery as Susie, along with a listing for Jacob W. Ferree (b. 1894, d. 1928) with a stone that matches Neva's. I have not been able to find any marriage record for Neva and Jacob, though I have been able to find Neva's US Social Security Death Index record, confirming her death at the age of ninety-six. Her indexed obituary contains only two names of relatives, both indicated to be cousins, though I have not read the actual obituary text as of yet. Also, her listing in the 1930 US Census lists her as a boarder in a household in Kansas City, Jackson Cty, Missouri, as a thirty-six-year-old widow.
Returning to Bernice, I have not managed to find a marriage record for her yet, but the same unsourced online information mentioned above suggests her married name was Harrison. Searches for Bernice with this surname turn up both 1920 and 1930 US Census listings in Joplin for Kansas-born Willis R. Harrison with Nebraska-born wife Bernice B. Harrison, both listed as age twenty-eight and thirty-eight in the respective census records. Further searches for Willis found a burial listing in the aforementioned Mount Hope Cemetery for "W.R. Harrison," b. 1891, d. 1949) on the FindaGrave.com website. The supplemental information for this listing states "[S]pouse: Bernice Eckert b. 1891 in Nebraska d. 1930 in Joplin, Jasper, MO," though no burial listing for her exists on the website.
If we assume this information is correct, then it would appear that Bernice died sometime after the 1930 US Census (date on the form is 3 Apr 1930) at the age of thirty-eight or thirty-nine. No children appeared in her household in either 1920 or 1930, suggesting she had none prior to her death.
The information also suggests that Neva did not have any children; she and Jacob likely married sometime after 1920, and after his death no children appear with her in the subsequent census records.
By all accounts, then, Ellsworth seems likely to have died in 1928, and his daughter Bernice in 1930. Susie died in 1959, and Neva survived the rest of her family by several decades, dying in 1990. Ellsworth's line appears to have ended with her death.
