Narrative

Note: Researching John W. Hill

Because of the generally common nature of his name, John has proved somewhat difficult to research. His parents are named clearly on two different marriage records for him - the first in 1922, to Opal Marie James, and the second in 1929 to Clair Irene Arthur. I have not confirmed how his first marriage ended, though I suspect it was divorce and not her death. In the 1930 US Census, John and his second wife, Clair Irene, were listed as living with Clair's mother and step-father in Marion, Marion Cty, Ohio; in the 1940 US Census, the John and Clair were living alone in the same city.

I'm certain I've identified Clair's death records from March of 1981 in Marion, listing her as married - which suggests John was still alive at her death. In the same city three years later is a death record for a John W. Hill, with the correct birth year and listed as "widowed" upon his death. It seems most likely that this record applies to John, son of William and Florence, but I cannot be absolutely certain. For now, I have attributed this record to him. I have not located burial information for either John or Clair.

At this point, I have not seen any indication that John had children with either of his wives, but I cannot confirm this, either.

Interestingly, despite the relatively young age of their parents, in the 1920 US Census John and his older sister Hazel Lenore were living with aunt Victoria (Hill) Bauer, their father's older sister, along with her husband Phillip, in the city of Marion. Their parents were living in the same county, in rural Big Island Township, Marion Cty, Ohio. Whether something in the family dynamic led the two siblings to leave their parents' household, or whether the teenaged John and twenty-year-old Lenore decided to seek life and employment in the city, is not known at this time.
