Narrative

On their marriage record, her name is given as "Bertha M.E. Stiemke," while in the 1910 and 1920 US Census records, her name is transcribed as "Matilda Wendt." On their shared gravestone, her name is given as "Martha." Martha may well have been a nickname, and Matilda (or Mathilda) one of her middle names, and the one she and her parents chose to use for her. In the 1870 US Census in her parents' household (Gustav and Emilie Stiemke, named Hannah E. Steimke on the marriage record for their daughter), she is called Mathilda.
