A retired school teacher, Ray A. Stair, 84, died at 1:20 p.m. Monday at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.

A resident of Bluffton, he died as a result of a stroke and had been in failing health for several months.

Mr. Stair retired in 1987 after 16 years as an elementary school teacher. He was a 1935 graduate of Plymouth High School and of Taylor University in 1948. He also attended Indiana Wesleyan University.

He attended Hope Missionary Church in Bluffton and worked at World Missionary Press and in the maintenance department of Meadowvale Care Center in Bluffton.

In his earlier days he was engaged in farming and had resided in Wells County since 1979.

Mr. Stair served during World War II, from 1944 to 1946, with the U.S. Army. He was a member of Bluffton VFW Post 2809.

He was born in Marshall County May 29, 1917 to Harry and Lillie Beyler Stair. A first marriage was to Clara Ellen Brady, who died in 1970; his second marriage on Feb. 5, 1976 was to Norma A. Little Grove, who survives.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are a son, Tim R. Stair of Goshen; two stepchildren, Keith Grove of Naples, Fla., and Neil Grove of Fort Wayne; four sisters, Mrs. Watson (Rose) Goodman of Goshen, Mrs. Robert (Vera) Klatt of Plymouth, and Vida Stair and Tressie Stair, both of Bluffton; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A brother and a sister are deceased.

Services at 10 a.m. Thursday will be at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Homes with Rev. Matt Hartsell officiating.

Burial will be in Chapel Heights at Marion, Ohio.

Calling hours at the funeral home here will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
