Narrative

Note: Researching Johann "John" Lehmann

I have not found a complete accounting of John's life, but have found enough records to suggest at least a sketch of the events of his life over the years. The earliest record I can find for him is the 1880 US Census record for his parents' household in Hustisford, Dodge Cty, Wisconsin, which gives his age as five and his name as Johannes. The next record (and all that follow) name him John.

In the 1900 US Census he was counted as living with his widowed mother and his bachelor older brother Paul, this time in Herman Twp, Dodge Cty, with his age noted as twenty-five and his occupation as "farm laborer." By 1910, John had moved to west and was counted as a single boarder in Yakima, Yakima Cty, Washington, working as a meat cutter in a butcher shop. When he registered for the draft for WWI in late 1918 in Seattle, King Cty, Washington, he was still single (and listing his mother as his closest family) but now gave his occupation as an unemployed meat cutter.

The 1920 US Census listed John once again as a single boarder in Port Angeles, Clallam Cty, Washington, again giving his occupation as "butcher" in a "shop." On 2 Sep 1924, he married Pearl E. (Concannon) Benson, originally born in Wanatah, LaPorte Cty, Indiana.

Pearl had come with her parents from Indiana to Washington sometime in her youth, and married in 1900 to Bradley Leroy Benson. Pearl had two girls from her first marriage - Mary, b. 1903, and Dorothy, b. 1904. Dorothy died in late 1904 at a month of age, and by 1910 Pearl was listed as a widowed boarder in Seattle. Bradley Leroy remarried in late 1912, and by 1920 Pearl was counted as living in Malaga, Chelan Cty, Washington, boarding with several other teachers and her teenaged daughter, Mary.

John and Pearl boarded the ship Maui on 10 Dec 1924 in San Francisco, and arrived six days later in Honolulu. They stayed there several weeks, and then returned on the ship Matsonia in early February of 1925. (The records contain their birthdates and birthplaces, confirming that this vacationing pair is the same John and Pearl noted thus far.)

In the 1930 US Census, John and Pearl were counted living in Port Angeles, Clallam Cty, Washington again, this time with John's occupation given as "Cafe Proprietor." I have not found record of the two of them in the 1940 US Census, and the next record I have found is that of John's death in late 1951 in Stockton, San Joaquin Cty, California - it appears he and Pearl moved there sometime after 1930 to be closer to Pearl's daughter Mary (m. Sacknitz) and Pearl's one grandchild, John Kent Sacknitz. Pearl's death followed some years later in 1965.

John shares a headstone with his older brother Paul in Hustisford Cemetery in Hustisford; Paul had died earlier that same year (1951). I suspect John is not actually buried there, as his death certificate notes that the disposition was handled by Park View Crematory. This same crematory was noted on Pearl's death certificate in 1965, and her disposition was clearly recorded as "cremation." I would guess that Pearl made arrangements for the John's shared stone with his brother, or perhaps John had requested and arranged it before his death; he appears to have survived all of his siblings. (The one potential exception might be his younger sister Emma, who also died in 1951.) John does not appear to have had any children of his own, with his only known marriage coming when he was nearly fifty and his wife in her mid-forties.

I have not found any full or accurrate record of John's birth name - in fact, I have not yet found any record that records even report a middle initial for him.
