Narrative

[Obituary for Hershel Grove, from the Decatur Daily Democrat, 4 Aug 1973; posted online to the FindaGrave.com website.]

Herschel [sic] Grove

Funeral services for Grove will be conducted Monday, August 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the Thoma-Rich Funeral Home, Bluffton.

Grove was born May 20, 1915 in Wells county, the son of Ward and Rosie Braner-Grove, who preceded him in death. He was married to the former Norma Little on Nov. 26, 1936 in Bluffton and she survives.

Grove was active in Wells county Democratic party activities for a number of years, having served as president of the Democratic Jefferson Club of Wells county and as Wells county campaign chairman for former Indiana governor Roger D. Branigin and U.S. representative J. Edward Roush. He assumed the duties of manager of the Bluffton license bureau branch office in 1964 under the Branigin administration, resigning in 1968 when he became employed by the General Electric plant in Decatur.

He was a plumber in the maintenance division of the GE plant and was active in G.E. Club activities. Workers remember him as being well respected among his peers.

Grove spent much of his life in the heating and plumbing business in Bluffton prior to joining FE. He became a part owner of the Bluffton Bulk Company in 1966, resigning his association with that firm where he took up employment at GE.

Grove was a member of the Bluffton Moose Lodge and formerly served as secretary of the lodge.

Also surviving are two sons, Keith of Bluffton route 3 and Neil K. of Bluffton route 4; two sisters, Mrs. Cleo McCormick of Murray and Mrs. Fred (Garnet) Ulmer of Sturgis, Mich.; two brothers, Lester of Bluffton and Donald of Berne; and two grandchildren.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Alton Miller. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Saturday until time of services. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton.
