Narrative

On Earl's US Social Security Death Index record, his birthdate is given as 14 Aug 1898; this same year is engraved on his headstone, as well. In every other record, his birth year is given as 1899:

- In both his Indiana and Michigan obituaries, his birthdate is reported as 14 Aug 1899.
- On his marriage record from 1922, his birth year is noted as 1899.
- On the listing for this parents' household in the 1900 US Census, his birth year and month are specifically reported on the form as Aug 1899.

I suspect the birth year on the US Social Security Death Index record is in error, and that for whatever reason this error was propagated to his headstone when engraved.
