Narrative

[Obituary for Andrew Trunk, from the Great Falls Tribune, 19 Jun 2001; posted online from microfilm from the Cascade County Records collection.]

FORT BENTON - Andrew Trunk, 94, a German immigrant, died Friday, a week before his birthday, of natural causes at a Fort Benton hospital.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Fort Benton with cremation to follow. Benton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Missouri River Medical Center, 1501 Saint Charles, Fort Benton, MT 59442.

He was born June 22, 1906, in Breitungsbach, West Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1926. His first destination was Roundup, where he worked on the railroad. He then worked on the Bull Run Dam in Oregon before returning to Montana to the AB Cook Ranch outside White Sulphur Springs. Later he painted bridges for the railroad and wrangled horses throughout eastern Montana.

While working on a threshing crew in the Eagle Butte area, he met Helen Miller. He was working for the Aryshire dairy when they were married July 14, 1931. They moved to Centreville, where he worked in the mine, first as an ambulance driver, then as a manager of all the mine's horses. He was required to break, train, shoe and care for the horses around the clock.

He began farming in the Big Sandy area at the Frame place in 1946, where he stayed until moving to the Eagle Butte area, where he farmed and ranched until his death.

He enjoyed horses, cattle, farming and ranching.

Survivors include his wife of Fort Benton; son Don Trunk of San Diego and Oscar Trunk of Fort Benton; daughters Katherine Larking and Joy Crawford of Fort Benton and Shirley Ramer of Big Sandy; sisters Kunigunde Weidner and Maris Saal of West Germany; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
