Note: Researching Nellie Mason Van Camp

In the marriage records for some of her children, her name is given alternately as Nellie M. Vancamp, Nellie Marian Vancamp, Nellie M. Mason Vancamp, Nellie Meriam Van Camp, and Nellie Miriam Mason. In both of her marriage records (first to Edward King, and later ot George Gracey), she names her parents as Frank Mason and Cora Pebbles (or similar). Her birthdate is always given as 12 Oct 1888, and her place of birth as Massachusetts (Natick or Boston).

There are birth records for her in Natick, Middlesex Cty, Massachusetts with the correct date and parents, naming her either Nellie Miriam Mason or Nellie Mariann Mason. The next record I can find is for the household of James and Sarah (Kitt) Van Camp in Huntington, Huntington Cty, Indiana, in the 1900 US Census listing. James and Sarah were born in West Virginia and Indiana, respectively, and married in Huntington in 1884. In 1900, living with them is Nellie Van Camp, given as a twelve-year-old daughter and born in Massachusetts. I have to assume the Van Camps adopted her, so presumably her parents were already dead by that time. (Her adoption would explain the two surnames.)

Her two marriages, of course, added another two surnames to the mix - King and Gracey - though the use of these seems to have been avoided in most of the records I see, outside of her marriage record to George Gracey and the US Census records for her through the years.
