Narrative

[Article "Joseph F. Smith," from Portrait and Biographical Album of Washington, Clay and Riley Counties, Kansas, pp847-848.]

Joseph F. Smith, living in the southwestern part of Washington County, is pursuing the even tenor of his way in the cultivation of 160 acres of good land on section 2, Barnes Township. He is a gentleman very quiet and unobtrusive in his manner of living, an honest man and a good citizen, and highly esteemed by those who know him. He came to Kansas in 1883, settling upon his present place, where he as effected fair improvements, and brought the land to a high state of cultivation. His possessions are the result of his own industry, as he started in life without means and has worked his way gradually upward, and has surrounded himself and family with all the comforts of life. He is a member in good standing of the Church of God, with which he united several years ago, and in politics he is independent, supporting principles rather than men.

Morrow County, Ohio, was the early tramping ground of our subject, and where his birth took place Oct. 20, 1847. He was the eldest of four children born to Adam H. and Susan (Feighner) Smith, the former a native of Pennsylvania and born March 2, 1823. When but a child the father of our subject removed with his parents to Morrow County, Ohio, where he was reared and lived until 1851. He then emigrated to Huntington County, Ind., where he sojourned a period of thirty years. In 1881, crossing the Mississippi he took up his abode in Richardson County, Neb., where he lived two years, then returned to Huntington County, Ind., of which he is now a resident. He has followed farming all his life and is in good circumstances, financially. For many years he has been an active member of the Church of God. The paternal grandfather of our subject was Jacob Smith, one of the pioneer settlers of the Key-stone State.

Mrs. Susan (Feighner) Smith, was born in Pennsylvania, July 30, 1826, and departed this life in Huntington County, Ind., March 15, 1885, when approaching the sixtieth year of her age. Her father was Daniel Feighner, a native of Pennsylvania, who spent his last years in Indiana. To the parents of our subject were born four children, viz.: Catherine, Joseph F., Alexander and William. Joseph was reared in Huntington County, Ind., and at early age became familiar with farming pursuits. He received a limited education under the imperfect school system of that time, and remained a resident of Huntington County, until the removal of his father to Nebraska, and he was there a resident of Falls City Precinct, until 1883. That year he came to Kansas, and settled where he now resides.

Mr. Smith was first married in Huntington County, Ind., Sept. 28, 1868, to Miss Sarah DeWitt of that county. Mrs. Smith was born in Wells County, Ind., Feb. 8, 1846, and was the daguhter [sic] of Clark and Mary (Ogle) DeWitt, who spent their last years in Indiana. Of this union there were born three children - William A., June 20, 1869; Albert S., Dec. 9, 1870; and Susan E., March 18, 1879. The eldest born only lived a few months, being taken away Oct. 9, 1869. Mrs. Sarah (DeWitt) Smith died at the homestead in Barnes Township, Kan., Jan. 28, 1887. Mr. Smith was married March 1, 1888, to Miss Amanda Brandt. This lady is a native of Ohio, and was born July 28, 1848, being the daughter of John and Sarah Brandt, who are now living in Ohio.

[Editing note: There are a few known errors in this text, though they are not egregious. Susan (Feighner) Smith died on 15 March 1886, not 1885 as given in the text's article. Sarah (DeWitt) Smith's mother was Malinda (Ogle) DeWitt, not Mary, and after Malinda's death sometime in the 1860s, Sarah's father Clark remarried to Rebecca Hickson, fathered several more children, and moved to southeastern Kansas, where he died in 1889.]
