DEATH: KILLED BY A TRAIN
'Lewis Platt, a Farmer, While Driving Across the Erie Track at Markle, Meets a Terrible Fate.'
(from the Daily of Saturday - Saturday being the 16th Jan 1892)
Yesterday evening, as cannon ball passenger train No.5 was thundering through the village of Markle, it struck a sled containing one occupant, a farmer named Lewis Platt who was killed instantly.
The engineer was T.O. McIllvaine, of this city, who stopped the train as soon as possible, when it was found the victim was already lifeless and nothing could be done to undo the calamity. The body was removed to the depot and given into the hands of friends.
A line of box cars standing on a siding is thought to have obstructed a view of the track so as to render it impossible to see the approaching train. It was storming and the flying snow was blinding, which also made it more difficult for the farmer to apprise himself of the impending danger. As it was cold weather he was evidently bundled about the ears until his hearing was interfered with so he was unable to detect the rumbling of the cars. It seems the team had already gotten over the track and escaped without a scratch, no injury whatever being noticed on either of the horses. The sled was completely demolished and reduced to atoms. The unfortunate driver was hurled a long distance and was in all probabilty saved any moments of agony by reason of his instant death. The train was under full speed and must have been running at a rate of forty miles an hour. Being a fast line it does not stop at Markle.
Coroner Beaver was sent for, who went to Markle this morning for the purpose of fully investigating the circumstances surrounding this case.
