Founding partner of Defiance Clinic, Dr. Paul E. Palmer, 71, Defiance, died at 3:34 p.m. Saturday in St. Rita's Memorial Hospital, Lima. He practiced medicine in Defiance 35 years until his retirement in 1994. His specialty was gynecology and obstetrics and delivered an estimated 5,500 babies during his medical career. In 1959, he joined the Fauster-Newcom-Cunningham-Busteed-Cullen Medical Clinic in Defiance. He became a founding partner of the Defiance Clinic in 1962 when the Fauster group merged with Drs. James and John Cameron to form the original clinic staff. He also formerly served as chief of staff at Defiance Hospital.

Dr. Palmer was born Nov. 21, 1927, in Defiance, the son of Julian S. and Florence (Shepfer) Palmer. On June 15, 19151, he married Norma Jean Weible, who survives. He was a 1945 graduate of Defiance High School and attended Defiance college before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1946. He spent 22 months in the Navy, rising in rank from an apprentice second class to a pharmacist mate third class. He was discharged in 1947, returned to Defiance College and earned a bachelor's degree in 1950. He received a doctor of medicine degree in 1954 from Case Western Reserve, Cleveland, and served his one-year internship and four-year residency in gynecology and obstetrics at St. Luke's Hospital, Cleveland, before returning to his hometown in 1959. While at St. Luke's, he studied under Dr. Gerald Hurd, one of the most prominent gynecology and obstetrics physicians in the country.
